Weaning - An Overview

Did you know that the term weaning usually refers to introducing anything other than breast milk into your baby's diet?

For most breastfed babies this happens at around 6 months. But if you can, it's recommended that you keep breastfeeding after introducing solids and beyond your baby's second birthday.

The decision to stop breastfeeding is a personal choice and it affects each mum differently.

You may feel forced to stop, finding yourself on the receiving end of family or social pressure. I personally experienced this when my son was about 19 months old. In some circles I became a closet breast feeder until I finally caved in. Although the process —thankfully— happened quickly, it was very distressing on me and my baby… something that I don't ever want to repeat.

Sometimes babies decide —on their own— that they don't want breast milk anymore. The sudden change can leave mums feeling sad and depressed while their hormones adjust and they get used to the change in routine.

Certain situations can make you feel like you have no other choice but to stop feeding. You may be pregnant or returning to work, your baby may be teething or waking frequently to breastfeed.

Although there are strategies you can use to continue breastfeeding through these situations, you may decide that to stop breastfeeding is the best option for you and your family.

Whatever the reason, time frame, or age of your baby there are ways to help you both through this inevitable stage.

It's a process that can take time and it helps to be aware of how you are feeling, to check your breasts and to keep special time aside for you and your baby to maintain the closeness that you shared while breastfeeding.
