Reflux Babies

Most babies will throw up a bit of milk occasionally…often, it's completely normal.

Reflux babies will seem to bring up almost all the milk they drank. Some do it happily while others go through a lot of pain in the process.

If your baby doesn't seem to suffer from the reflux, then apart from going through a lot of bibs and towels there might not be any need for you to do anything about it. But if your baby is suffering, your doctor may be able to prescribe some medication that can help too.

There are also babies with baby reflux that feel the horrible pain of heartburn without actually vomiting. They may cry, scream and arch their backs, rather than bring their knees up like a baby suffering from colic would.

If your baby does have acid reflux and breastfeeding has become difficult, you really are not alone and often it's perfectly normal for reflux babies to cry during and after a breastfeed. While many mums feel that they haveno other option, putting your baby on formula may complicate things.

Instead, you can try keeping pressure off your baby's tummy, so loosen his or her nappy and make sure your baby is not slumping over if you have them sitting upright. Propping something under the head of your baby's mattress so that he or she sleeps in a more upright position can also help.

Like Colic babies, babies with reflux may wake frequently…making it very stressful for the whole family. They may also be very slow in putting on weight so it may be reassuring to keep in close contact with your baby health nurse.

It can be a very hard thing to cope with, but thankfully it is temporary and babies usually grow out of it. Try to take some time to recharge your batteries by looking after yourself, even taking 5 minutes to sit alone in the sun can make a huge difference.

Please always remember to consult your health professional to find out information that is relevant to your specific situation.
