Nutrition and Breastfeeding

When it comes to nutrition and breastfeeding, apart from some general guidelines, for most mums there is no real right or wrong breastfeeding diet.

The most important thing you can do, which applies to just about everyone whether they are breastfeeding or not, is drink lots of water eat lots of fresh healthy food, and get out in the sunshine to ensure you get lots of vitamin D. You may find that this takes some planning, as most mums tend to forget about their needs and focus 100% on their baby's. But grabbing a carrot or cucumber takes no time at all and is much healthier than snacking on chips or biscuits.

The only foods to avoid while breastfeeding are foods which contain anything that you, your partner or someone in either of your families may have been allergic to. Even alcohol is generally okay in moderation.

And while some women lose weight while breastfeeding, others find that it's not that easy. But being a new mum and coping with less sleep, less energy and less you time means that dieting and breastfeeding can take more of a toll on your body and your ability to get through the day.

Making sure you eat, and eat well is the can play a big role in keeping you a healthy, happy mum and partner. Planning your shopping and making time for yourself to have proper meals, may seem unrealistic but you may find it makes all the difference.

After all your baby needs you, so taking care of your baby means taking care of yourself too.

Please always remember to consult your health professional to find out any dietary information that is relevant to your specific situation.
