I personally used to think of breastfeeding as a contraceptive and for many women in the first few months after birth, it may be. But it is possible to fall pregnant while breastfeeding.
I met one breastfeeding mum who was actually 6 months pregnant before she knew she was expecting her second baby. She went to the doctor thinking she had serious indigestion and found out that what she was feeling was actually her baby kicking!! I couldn't believe it and neither could she, Im sure.

Some women fall pregnant when breastfeeding and although there are different thoughts on if you should or can continue breastfeeding while pregnant, providing you have a healthy pregnancy with no history of miscarriage it is usually quite safe and natural to do so.
I guess beyond this, other concerns around breastfeeding and pregnancy shift to what happens after birth. Issues like how your colostrum can affect your older child and how on earth to manage breastfeeding two children. But lots of women do manage tandem breastfeeding and find that it strengthens the bond between siblings.
I never had the opportunity to breastfeed while I was pregnant, but the women I know that have describe it as amazing.
Yes, it can take time –like everything worthwhile– but it can be done. And since information I encourage you to read on and do your own research so that you can decide what's best for you and your family.
